CRA NO. 23 - Santa Fe In The Intermountain West

Colorado Rail Annual No. 23: Santa Fe and the Intermountain West

This annual is "Santa Fe All the Way!" A Raton Mountain Passage from Trinidad, Colorado to Raton, New Mexico. Beginning in the prehistoric era brings the story up through recent times. Included is a review of other railroads in the area: Colorado & Southern, Denver & Rio Grande Western, several short lines, and even the Trinidad street railway system.
Renowned locomotive historian Lloyd Stagner's from "Newton to New Mexico in the Steam Era: The Santa Fe's Northern District 1909-1953" outlines locomotive operating practices, operations, and assignments. His article is complemented by "A Northern District Steam Panorama" an overview by another authority on steam motive power in the West, Cornelius W. Hauck.
Further west, Gordon C. Bassett's "Desert Main Line: The Santa Fe in Arizona" surveys the main route across the norther part of the Sunset Stae, with emphasis on the remote telegraph station at Nelson. Corny Hauck rounds out the book with "La Junta: Santa Fe's Colorado Connection" an account of this important junction and division point from 1876 to the present.
