SP's Sacramento Shops...Incubator of Innovation

Sacramento General Shops was one of the largest and most productive railroad shops in North America. From beginnings before the driving of the Gold Spike, until closing in 1990, hundreds of steam locomotives were constructed there, along with thousands of freight and passenger cars. In addition, hundreds of diesel locomotives were rebuilt, along with much rolling stock. This complex and fascinating story includes the thousands of craftsmen who worked there through the decades. This outstanding book about these famous shops is a well researched, detailed, and richly illustrated history.
